Grey cataract can have various causes; in most cases, the clouding of the lens is age-related. In this case it is called senile cataract. Senile cataract does not usually develop until people are 60 years or older.

Large-scale studies showed that sunlight (ultraviolet light) can promote the development of cataract. That is the reason why even young people should wear sunglasses to shield their eyes against increased ultraviolet radiation. A diet rich in vitamins, especially vitamin C, is also helpful in delaying the onset of senile cataract.

If the initially slight clouding of the lens intensifies and causes considerable deterioration to the patient’s vision, surgery is the only treatment which – provided the patient has not got any other eye disorders – is almost always successful and exposes the patient to little strain because it is usually painless. In today’s cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a so-called intraocular plastic lens.
